UN event highlights women's role in technology and communication

The LGW features best practices on the GOOD WILL Women magazine and shares with event attendees

New York, USA — On Thursday, 15, the LGW representative at the United Nations, Danilo Parmegiani, was interviewed by the UN News with respect to the work of the Legion of Good Will in Brazil and abroad in favor of women and girls in the use of technology in socio-educational work and of communication. The theme is in line with what is being discussed at the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York, USA.

Regarding this important stage of the international media, Danilo emphasized: "The Legion of Good Will traditionally participates in this Conference and always presents its fraternal recommendations. The LGW material is published on the GOOD WILL Women magazine, available in four languages, in which the institution features its practical experience for almost seven decades in developing, through programs of social assistance and education with ecumenical spirituality, the empowerment of women in different dimensions of our society. These stories are received with great enthusiasm at the UN Headquarters by all international delegations as well as the UN News itself, which carried an interview, in Portuguese, with the Legion of Good Will, precisely so that these recommendations could gain more international visibility.

In 2018, the CSW brings as one of the topics for debate: "Women's access to and participation in the media, impact and use of information and communication technologies as an instrument for the advancement and women empowerment."

The pertinence of the discussion is clear when, even with all the advances and efforts employed in democratizing women’s access to the internet and new technologies, it is still estimated 250 million fewer women online compared to men and 1.7 billion in low and middle-income countries without cell phones (International Telecommunication Union, 2016).

Best practices for a better world

The Legion of Good Will (LGW) is once again present at the event, through the magazine GOOD WILL Women (available in Spanish, French, English and Portuguese), featuring recommendations and best practices on usage of technology at socio-educational work and communications in all its units in seven countries.

Providing these vulnerable girls and women with access to technology increases their capabilities and leadership opportunities and empower them within their families, communities and national economies. At the LGW, by adding all this knowledge to the values linked to Ecumenical Spirituality - such as Solidarity and Ethics - we prepare the future generations to live the Global Citizenship.
